Yesterday I taught myself how to spin paper into thread (shifu).
These two samples are made from 8"x10" sheets of washi.
The grey one is a Kozo paper, and the beige one is a Tengu-jo tissue.
I think I like the Kozo better because it's a little bit sturdier.
I've been doing research on shifu, but haven't found much information, I'd be curious to know if
anyone else has experience spinning their own thread out of paper,
and if so, what is your method for attaching the ends to each other?
I find that these are weak points, but glue doesn't really work very well because it makes them stiff.

  1. Hey!

I found your blog a few days ago and I'm in love with it. Your work is so creative and inspiring! (I know that you probably get to hear this kind of thing all the time, but simply had to say it myself)

May I ask how you spinned these? :)

  2. Thank you so much Linnea - I'm so glad you like my blog!
I spun the paper using a handmade drop spindle.

  3. Oh I see. Thank you!

Keep up with the great work!
