Trip to Spain

This is a book I put together with some photos from my trip to Spain last summer.
I traveled through Catalonia, the north-eastern part of Spain, visiting a bunch of cities and towns including
Barcelona, Sitges, Girona, Tarragona, Montserrat, CadaquƩs and Cap de Creus.

Mason Jar Succulent Terrarium

What to make for a friend who says she doesn't want any birthday presents?
How about a mason jar succulent terrarium?
How could she say no?

Leather + Canvas Clutch

I made this leather and canvas clutch as a birthday present for a friend.
The tassel was fun to make so I made a few extra.

Some things I found on my walk through the park.

from my sketchbook

I enjoy mindless repetitive drawing that puts you into a meditative state.

Leather Triangle Necklace

I made this symphony of triangles necklace from
a little piece of scrap distressed leather and a handful of jump rings.

Just dropped these of at Freedom Clothing, right on time for the beginning of the gift-giving season.
And they are also available in my online shop!

More Triangles

More watercolour triangles. Rain, rain go away!

November 1, 2012

The ultimate cure for rainy days: obsessive, repetitive tasks that lull your mind into a bit of an oblivion, like painting a whole bunch of colourful watercolour triangles.

Small Chevron Necklace

Another leather necklace, this time with smaller, chunkier chevrons.

Leather and Gold

I made another leather chevron necklace,
but this time added a splash of gold by applying gold leaf to the leather.

Leather Chevron Necklace

I made this chevron necklace out of a piece of scrap leather,
a bit of gunmetal chain and a handful of matching jump rings.

Another 2'x2' black and white print - this time of a deer head!

Instagram Prints

I've been wanting to try printing some of my Instagram photos on a large scale, but was unsure how they would look, especially considering I've been taking them on my not very impressive 0.7 megapixel iPod Touch camera. But I decided to embrace the lo-fi look, brought them to Kinko's and printed them out 2'x2' in black and white.
They have a newsprint quality, which I quite like.

These photos were taken at Cap de Creus - a peninsula at the very north eastern point of Catalonia, during my trip to Spain this summer.

Wedding Dress

This post has been a long time coming, and I am very excited to show you
the wedding dress I made for my dear friend Maya. Not being a seamstress or a pattern-maker,
it was an interesting process of trial and error.
I made a papier mache mold of her body and used it as a body form.
I decided to treat the process like sculpture, draping the fabric until it formed
a pleasing shape around her body, and then pinning and sewing it in place.
You can see some of the process photos below.

The dress is made of two types of silk - a heavier satin and a lighter raw silk crinkled chiffon.
Above you can see how I constructed the bodice out of the heavier silk.
I later draped and pleated the chiffon so that there was a little bit of sheer fabric visible.
The best part was seeing the dress come alive when Maya put it on.
It moved and flowed in ways I could only dream of!
Thanks to the lovely and talented Scarlet O'Neill for these photos!

I've been loving the pairing of turquoise and gold, so I made a few simple
beaded bracelets with these colours. I also found a name bracelet (middle)
that was put on my mother's wrist by a nurse the day she was born.
Part of me wants to take it apart and string the beads onto a new, wearable bracelet,
but the other part thinks I should keep it just the way it is - it's so tiny!

On Paper - Music Video

I don't normally post here about my day job, but I think this project is a perfect union
of music video and craftiness. I created this video with my partner in crime Maya Bankovic
for Canadian rock band Arkells and their song On Paper. We decided to take the title literally
and printed the entire video on paper, cut the characters out with X-Acto knifes,
and then re-photographed it all, frame by frame.

Also, this post wouldn't be complete if I didn't give a huge thank you to our
amazing team - both on set and in the many tedious days that followed.

Butterfly Card

To accompany my wedding presents, I made a bunch of butterfly cards. I was inspired by
this butterfly badge by Denise Sharp, and decided to use the idea of butterflies,
but instead have them hovering around a white crepe paper flower.

Plate Clocks

It's wedding season and all my friends are getting married. So of course that means I have been busy
making lots of wedding presents. Here are a couple of clocks I made out of plates - with help from
the very talented Jelena Pticek who kindly drilled the holes for me. I bought plain white plates, painted
them with Pebeo porcelaine paint and added the clock mechanisms.
I actually made three, but I liked them so much that I decided to keep one for myself
and it is now ticking away in my kitchen.

flowers in your hair

I made these fascinators for the bridesmaids in my friend's wedding. I bought the flowers and added
the feathers and bird-cage veil. My friend Olga added little gem stones and
bits of lace to class them up a touch.

Bullet Casing Necklaces

Two weekends ago I went on a bachelorette road trip to Ohio with a group of six girls - we stayed
on an Amish farm, met some beautiful animals, sang karaoke with the locals in a dive bar,
went on a dinner cruise, and shot guns. It was definitely an unconventional bachelorette,
but probably the most fun I've had in a long time.
When we were at the shooting range, I was struck by how beautiful the brass bullet casings were.
I collected a handful from the floor and decided to use them as settings for some turquoise
gems and make them into necklaces. I made one for each of us as a souvenir from the trip.

Running Wild

I made this woodland animals mobile for a friend who just had her first baby!

June 11, 2012

I've been doing some spring cleaning and decided to get rid of a whole bag-load
of old clothes, but before sending them off I made a doll out of some of the fabric - her dress
used to be a pair of shorts; her bloomers, a summer shirt; her scarf, an old sweater.
It's really hard to get rid of things when you see potential in every little scrap of fabric!

A pet octopus for a friend who loves all things nautical.
Made out of polymer clay and painted with acrylics.
